Maya women of Guatemala create these beautifully woven, one-of-a-kind handmade dolls. The doll-making project was designed by Maya Traditions, a fair trade business working with 85 Maya women, to enrich their lives by providing meaningful work that produces income for their families while instilling in them a sense of cultural pride. In addition, they use the profits to do projects in education scholarships and medicinal herbs to benefit these women. Traditionally, Maya women learn backstrap weaving when they are as young as eight years. The 15" doll wears handwoven huipiles and cortes (blouses and skirts) just like the clothing the women wear. The 100% cotton dolls feature hand-embroidered faces, yarn hair, and rich brown skin of handwoven fabric. All clothing is completely removable. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
